Report of the Southwest Harbor Fire Department
for the year of 1994

With great relief, the Southwest Harbor Fire Department noted a dramatic DECREASE in both the number of calls for our assistance as well as the total number of Structure fires. In addition, we saw no major changes in the types of calls we responded to. The time put into training with our neighboring departments to learn how each operates was put to the test during the mutual aid call to the Town of Bar Harbor for the Blue Nose Inn fire. Our department responded with 8 fully qualified personnel to the scene and interfaced with other department members from departments as far away as Blue Hill and Orland in Command, Attack and Support Functions. All participants have commented that they feel that the intensive inter-department training helped our members to work in harmony with other departments as well to develop a significant bond with the other departments within the county.
During the Summer, We were visited by an inspector from the Insurance Service Organization, a group that evaluates a towns fire protective service's for insurance companies, and he provided us with an extensive list of recommendations to help us cope with any of the many services that we may be called upon for by our rapidly expanding community. We have placed plans in motion to address these recommendations during the coming year.
Lastly, we urge the members of our community to endorse and use the new house numbering system that has been adopted for our town. People change, but the addresses don't and to allow us to provide you with the fastest service possible, we ask that you both post your home number as prescribed and to make sure that anyone that may need emergency services be aware of your address and to relay it to the public safety dispatcher when you call.
The Department would again like to thank Chief Terry Assistant Chief's Willey and Martel as well as the other Towns Departments for their time and assistance.
